Scope
This document is the result of market analysis and requirement specifications for the Operations Management System project.
Overview
Operations Management System (OMS) is a software application that keeps track of Operations in any sort of business and generates necessary reports. Using this system any business can track each and every task by the number of human hours spent for the task, the expenses incurred for the task, the revenue that the task generated and finally the profit/loss incurred due to this task. A task can be classified as a project and can be split into multiple subtasks. These subtasks can be called as sub projects.

There is a big challenge in developing a system that can serve various business environments. Not all businesses operate in the same manner. In addition, it is very difficult to tackle every business needs with one system. A lot of research has been done to gather as much requirements as possible to make this product very generalized.
Several OMS systems exist in the market already. However, lot of these systems has to make changes to their applications to customize for every client. This adds extra burden in expenses towards making customization. At least two developers need to be allocated to do these customizations.
Semafor took a survey and gathered very important feedbacks from several potential clients to find out their needs and requirements.

As part of the competitive research, it is found that lot of customers are demanding a web based solution as several personnel in the office can work on the system at the same time without going thru the hassle of installing software on all their machines. It is also easy to upgrade the software at one central location rather than upgrading it on every pc as and when there is a need to upgrade the software
Also, to stay ahead in the competition, it is decided to use Microsoft's new technology which is .Net environment.
The following technologies are decided:
- Java, J2EE for web development user interface
- VB.Net for backend for web development
- C# for business logic
- SQL Server 2000 for database development
